The Unknown Instruments Orchestra (ONI)
The Unknown Instruments Orchestra (ONI) ONI is a group of like-minded thinkers, who are devoted to the extraction of sound from different instruments. The orchestra infuses their palette of compositions with sounds and colors from many diverse musical cultures. These range from archaic, ritual sounds produced by primitive musical instruments, to the timbre, which rang in the 17th and 18th century to sounds born of modern electronic and digital devices. On the basis that every performance stands on improvisation, the performances rely on, before all else, the mood of the musicians — how their day went and how they feel. Owing to the fact that this is a living collective, the musicians are essentially able to put themselves in the right frame of mind and transmit this to their listeners. There is a name for this musical direction, which this orchestra is developing- debris music. “Debris” is space trash in NASA military terminology. If someone flies at a certain distance from Earth, he may hear the many vibrations of sound which are created by human civilization. ONI collects and uses this trash made of spectacular sounds.
